During Banned Books Week 2023, the Golden State Readers organized a the Break the Tape campaign to spread awareness to students in California and across the country about the book ban crisis sweeping the United States. That year, the Golden State Readers were able to wrap 400 California student’s backpacks in caution tape to spread awareness for their cause.

In 2024, the Golden State Readers relaunced their campagin and partnered with several organzations such as PEN America, Brooklyn Public Library, The Mix at San Fransisco Public Library, National Coalition Against Censorship, The Beatrice Martin Foundation, Nixa SABR, and many more and mobilized Caution Tape Ambassadors from 10 high schools in California and 15 campuses from seven other states. The Golden State Readers were able to multiply their numbers in 2024, wrapping 1,300 backpacks across the United States and counting.
