During Banned Books Week 2023, the Golden State Readers organized a the Break the Tape campaign to spread awareness to students in California and across the country about the book ban crisis sweeping the United States. Starting at several schools in California on Monday, October 2, students wrapped their backpacks in caution tape and printed informational cards to hand out to other students providing resources on the issue and information on how to get involved. The campaign spread to hundreds across California and caution tape now stands as a symbol for the group on their mission to increasing access to diverse literature.
